Blackout: Nigerians in darkness, as national electricity grid collapses for the umpteenth time this year

Another blackout, as the national electricity grid crashed again to zero megawatts (MWs) yesterday, plunging most parts of the country into darkness.

The development occurred days after electricity consumers said they had enjoyed improved supply.

According to the information from the System Operations, the national electricity grid as of 10 am yesterday had 3,712MW generated from 21 Generation Companies (GenCos) before it dropped to 0MW one hour after. It said the national grid, as of 10 am yesterday had 3,712MW generated from 21 GenCos before it dropped to 0MWs one hour later.

As of Sunday, the highest generation was 4,100MWs while the lowest was 3,652MWs, with the frequency hovering between 49.04 Hertz (Hz) and 50.34Hz. According to records, this is the seventh system collapse this year, much more than the three recorded last year.

Recall that the national grid collapsed twice in July and in August but was quickly restored, and power supply improvement was sustained before the latest system collapse yesterday.

Although TCN, the national grid manager was reportedly yet to establish the cause of the crash, some insiders said it could be as a result of maintenance of the 330 kilovolts (KVs) Jos – Bauchi transmission line maintenance, which was slated for yesterday.

Some DisCos, including Kaduna Electric, Enugu, and Kano, had already communicated the nationwide outage to their customers, noting that efforts were on-going to restore normal supply.

The national electricity grid’s collapse is coming at a time Nigerians were praising the distribution companies for improved power supply across the country.
